The Preliminary SAT Exam (PSAT) is a precursor to the SAT Exam that is intended to help students prepare for the SAT.

The PSAT is available in three levels, each of which is available to students at different stages in their high school careers.

Structure

All PSAT exams are fully digital and consist of the same two sections: Reading & Writing and Mathematics. The content tested is the same regardless of level, although the difficulty of questions and content is adjusted to be grade-appropriate.

Just like the SAT, the PSAT exam is adaptive. While students are taking the test, the questions they must answer change based on how they answered previous questions.

Most questions are multiple choice, with some mathematics questions requiring an entered answer.

National Merit Scholarship Competition

Students taking the PSAT/NMSQT in 10th or 11th grade who meet certain requirements can enter the National Merit Scholarship Competition, which has the potential to help successful students pay for college.
